Bringing practical AI skills into vocational education

The problem

Where it started

Vocational education talks about digitalisation while students graduate without ever using the tools that are reshaping their fields. Teachers want to bring AI into their classrooms but have no time, no training, and no examples that fit their subjects.

The solution

What got built

ICTU builds the bridge: hands-on AI and ICT training designed for vocational contexts, taught in the students' own trade language rather than computer-science abstractions. I coordinate the project and teach — curriculum, workshops, and train-the-trainer sessions so the skills stay after the project ends.

The impact

What changed

Teachers who had never opened an AI tool now use them weekly in their own teaching. The project's materials are reused across departments, which was the actual goal: capability that outlives the funding period.

Lessons learned
  1. 1

Adoption follows relevance: a welder learns AI through welding documentation, not chatbot demos.

  2. 2

Teacher confidence is the bottleneck — train the teachers and the students follow.

  3. 3

EU projects succeed on documentation discipline as much as on ideas.
